Homer & Jethro’s Slaughter The Standards showcases the sharp wit and virtuoso musicianship of the Grammy-winning comedy-country duo. Famed for their pitch-perfect parodies and sly satirical twists on pop and country favorites, the pair transform standards like “Love and Marriage” and “Jambalaya” into clever, harmony-rich send-ups without losing musical finesse. With special guest June Carter joining for playful takes on “Baby It’s Cold Outside” and “The Huckle Buck,” and lively stage cuts including the 1959 Grammy-winning “Battle of Kookamonga,” this collection captures the duo’s blend of tight picking, swing-informed arrangements, and deadpan humor that earned them the title “the thinking man’s hillbillies.” A must-have for fans of classic country, novelty records, and American musical satire.

Artist Background:

Homer & Jethro were the stage names of guitarist Henry D. “Homer” Haynes and mandolinist Kenneth C. “Jethro” Burns, an American duo celebrated for their virtuosity and razor-sharp parody songs. Emerging from the country and hillbilly circuits in the 1940s, they fused swing, jazz, and traditional country picking with sophisticated wordplay, becoming staples of radio, television, and the Grand Ole Opry. Beyond novelty hits, they were respected instrumentalists who recorded with leading Nashville players and influenced generations of country humorists and pickers. Their 1959 Grammy for “The Battle of Kookamonga” cemented their legacy as pioneers of musical satire within American roots music.

Accolades:
  • Grammy Award (1959) – “Battle of Kookamonga”
