JustIngredients allspice berries come from an aromatic evergreen tree native to the Caribbean, Central and South America which grows to a height of 10-18 metres. The tiny, hermaphrodite, 4-petaled flowers are white and develop in pyramidal cymes in the leaf axils. The female flowers bear clusters of green fruits that ripen to brown berries, 3-7mm in diameter.

Culinary Uses:

• Allspice is a key ingredient in Caribbean jerk seasoning
• Can be used in both sweet and savoury dishes
• Add to stuffing, nut roasts, stews, casseroles, sausages, ketchup, sauces, jams, and pickles
• Perfect for spiced breads, cakes, biscuits, mulled wine, and spiced cordials
• Whole dried berries can be added to pickles and chutneys
• Add to peppercorns in a grinder for a flavorful twist

Other Uses:

• Berries can be used in pot pourri and scented sachets
• Among the ingredients in the liqueurs Chartreuse and Benedictine
• Used to make Jamaican Dram, a traditional Caribbean drink with brown sugar, rum, and cinnamon
