Das Debütalbum von Calvin Keys aus dem Jahr 1971 für das Label Black Jazz Records kündigte die Ankunft eines neuen Sterns am Jazzgitarren-Firmament an. Keys hatte die 60er Jahre damit verbracht, die Crème de la Crème der Jazzorganisten zu unterstützen – Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Jack McDuff, Richard „Groove“ Holmes –, aber für seine erste Platte als Leader wollte er unbedingt mit einem Klavierspieler spielen stattdessen. Also rekrutierte er einen der Besten: Larry Nash, der nicht nur Mitglied des LA Express war, sondern auch mit allen spielte, von Eddie Harris über Bill Withers bis hin zu Etta James. Der Bassist Lawrence Evans, der Schlagzeuger Bob Braye und der Flötist-Songwriter Owen Marshall komplettierten die Gruppe auf „Shawn-Neeq“, das ein wenig an Pat Methenys frühes Werk (Metheny erkennt Keys als Einfluss) oder Grant Green erinnern könnte. Aber was Shawn-Neeq zusätzliche Tiefe verleiht, ist, dass es von Herzen kommt; Wie Keys in den Liner Notes von Pat Thomas sagt, die ein Interview mit dem Künstler enthalten: „Mein Ding war, ich schreibe über einige der Erfahrungen, die ich in meinem Leben gemacht habe.“ Seitdem ist Keys zu einer festen Größe in der Jazzszene der Bay Area geworden.
