Ihre einzige ernsthafte Zusammenarbeit zwischen Ellington und Gillespie fand am 19. Februar 1959 statt, als Diz an Dukes Columbia-Album „Jazz Party“ mitwirkte, das hier neu aufgelegt wurde und auf dem auch einer der wenigen Auftritte des Sängers Jimmy Rushing mit der Ellington-Band zu sehen war. Dizzy und Duke standen in den folgenden Jahren bei vielen anderen Gelegenheiten gemeinsam auf der Bühne, obwohl sie nur ein einziges Mal zusammen aufgenommen wurden, nämlich beim Konzert am 18. September 1965 beim Monterey Jazz Festival, als Dizzy erneut Ellingtons Orchester beitrat.
