This album compiles tracks from Musical Youth's first John Peel session, recorded in 1981, alongside previously unheard material sourced from quarter-inch reels preserved for over four decades by their mentor and producer, Toney Owens. These recordings illuminate the group's roots reggae style before their international breakthrough.

The project originated in 2020 when Pete Paphides, founder of the label Needle Mythology, contacted Owens regarding early recordings similar in style to the 1981 single "Generals/Political." Three years later, Owens granted access to his archive, revealing tapes dating back to 1978.

The early lineup featured Frederick Waite (formerly of The Techniques) alongside Patrick and Junior Waite, and Kelvin and Michael Grant. These young musicians grew up immersed in roots reggae, honing their skills locally in Birmingham. The recordings highlight the musical foundation instilled by Waite and the group's initial billing as Cultural Musical Workshop Youths.
