Beth Orton - The Ground Above [audioCD]

Beth Orton delivers her most direct and unapologetic music yet with The Ground Above. For over three decades, Orton has served as a vital voice, capturing vast cosmic forces through her intimate songwriting. This album is urgent, raw, and emotionally fearless, balancing subconscious expression with expansive, timeless song craft.

Orton’s vocal performance ranges from whispered incantation to primal wail, underpinning melodies that recall classic songbook forms. Throughout the record, she documents themes of survival, renewal, motherhood, identity, and political unease, exploring the ongoing choice to remain engaged in love, art, and the world.

Following her critical breakthrough with 2022’s Weather Alive, Orton self-produced The Ground Above. She maintained the collective spirit of the initial live recordings while sculpting and expanding the material over a year-long process. Orton reached new heights as a producer and songwriter, collaborating with trusted musicians including multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily, Sam Beste of Vernon Spring, drummers Chris Vatalaro (Antibalas, Radiohead) and Vishal Nayak (Nick Hakim), Trumpet player Christos Styliandes, and bassist Tom Herbert.
