Jet Li stars in this action-packed superhero spectacle produced by the legendary Tsui Hark! Tsui Chik (Li) leads a quiet life as a librarian, concealing his past as a member of the 701 Squad—an elite combatant group from a failed super-soldier project whose members are impervious to pain. When former comrades resurface to commit crimes under their commander Hung Kuk (Patrick Lung), Tsui must embrace his past and don the costume of the vigilante known as the Black Mask.

Adapted from the manhua by Pang Chi-ming and Li Chi-tak, this film is heavily influenced by Bruce Lee’s portrayal of Kato in The Green Hornet. The action is orchestrated by Yuen Woo-ping, who later won an Academy Award for his work on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
