The Unplanned Performance
On 2 June 1991, Paul Gilbert was scheduled to trade solos with blues legend Albert Collins at the Frankfurt Jazz Festival. When Collins was forced to cancel due to sudden health issues, the promoter asked Gilbert to headline the event without a prepared set or band. A backing band was quickly assembled using members of Ten Years After, and Gilbert rehearsed a handful of Jimi Hendrix songs just hours before showtime, stretching the solos into memorable, epic jams.
