James Brandon Lewis stands at the pinnacle of the international jazz world, recognized as one of the most influential voices in contemporary jazz. His powerful, direct tenor saxophone sound, combined with deep lyrical depth in both his solos and compositions, creates a tremendous impact, especially when channeled through his quartet.
Omni is the sixth album from the acclaimed James Brandon Lewis Quartet, featuring Aruan Ortiz, Brad Jones, and Chad Taylor. For the past decade, this ensemble has been central to Lewis's evolving concept of 'Molecular Systematic Music.' Initially based on six or seven-note scales, this concept expanded into a twelve-tone system and continues to grow. On Omni, the concept incorporates new elements, revealing a musical gesture that can be described as 'twelve-tone gospel.'
Artistic Significance
Considered arguably James Brandon Lewis's most personal statement yet, Omni showcases the mastery of the individual musicians within a group defined by internal dialogue and collective creativity. The liner notes, titled 'A sermon without words' by Kevin Le Gendre, conclude that the music found here is 'spiritual music in its purest form.'
