Directed by Takashi Miike (known for Audition and 13 Assassins) and written by Kankuro Kudo, Zebraman is an affectionate homage to the classic tokusatsu superhero TV shows of Japan's past. The film stars Atsuro Watabe as Shinichi, a teacher grappling with a midlife crisis as his family life deteriorates. To escape his harsh reality, Shinichi secretly adopts the persona of Zebraman, the hero from an obscure 1970s TV series from his childhood. As his personal life unravels, aliens begin invading Earth, forcing Shinichi to confront his lack of confidence and use his childhood fantasies to save the world.
