Mary Gauthier - Reckoning

Experience the profound complexity and nuanced storytelling of Mary Gauthier's album, 'Reckoning'. This collection features nine songs presented with directness, highlighting Gauthier's distinctive voice, her guitar, and subtle harmonica. While rooted in folk traditions, these are not simple broadsides but topical songs offering a long view, informed by a life rich with experience. Gauthier's celebrated tracks like "I Drink," "Mercy Now," and "Drag Queens in Limousines" are confessional narratives, observed with clarity and compassion. Her unique sound blends the languor of her native Louisiana with the directness of Boston, where she was once a restaurateur, and the precision of Nashville, her long-time home.

Building on the success of her Grammy-nominated 2018 release, 'Rifles & Rosary Beads,' which was co-written with Iraq war veterans, and her published memoir 'Saved by a Song,' Gauthier explores themes of personal, political, and spiritual reckoning in this album. As she writes, "A reckoning... can be personal, political, or spiritual. These songs inhabit all three realms at once."
