American Nightmare: A Novel

In this haunting historical novel, Kelly McWilliams plunges readers into the Jim Crow South through the eyes of Clark Wendell White, a light-skinned Black man who goes undercover to investigate lynchings. Clark's mission becomes a terrifying confrontation with the very evil that has haunted him since childhood, a malevolent presence he first encountered during the Atlanta Race Riot of 1906.

Years later, this same evil compels Clark to join the NAACP, where he answers an ad seeking men for dangerous undercover work. As a spy, Clark impersonates the Nightmare itself, investigating lynchings while grappling with his own past. His descent into this double life is complicated by the rise of a new chapter of the Ku Klux Klan in New York City, and by Sam Cahill, a man who can see through Clark's disguise. Clark must outwit both the living and the dead, confronting a past that refuses to stay buried and a future where his identity comes at a soul-deep price.

Inspired by the true story of civil rights activist Walter White, this gripping historical thriller reveals that the most terrifying monsters are not those that go bump in the night, but those that walk among us.
