Split Dogs - Nice N' Rough [CD]

Split Dogs - Nice N' Rough

The Station House, a recording studio nestled within a repurposed Victorian police station in Leeds, proved to be more than just a creative space for the Bristol-based garage rock band Split Dogs. It was also home to an impressive VHS collection, which, fueled by classics like 'Heavy Metal', 'Nightmare on Elm Street', and a Tina Turner live tape, inspired the band's sophomore album, 'Nice N' Rough'.

Produced by Jonah Falco (known for his work with High Vis, Rifle, and as the drummer for Fucked Up) and engineered by James Atkinson (formerly of Voorhees), this album delivers thirteen high-energy tracks. Expect lightning-fast guitar riffs, raspy vocals, and clear influences from legends such as Plasmatics, New York Dolls, Motörhead, and The Stooges.

Front-person Harry Martinez commands the microphone with a larger-than-life rock 'n' roll performance, channeling the band's renowned live energy directly into the recording. Beneath the glam rock sheen, 'Nice N' Rough' offers surprising depth and soul. Tracks like 'Be Somebody' encourage individuality, 'Speed Demon' addresses the importance of mental clarity, and the Danzig-esque 'Suffer' delves into the impact of parental abuse. Ultimately, the album champions living life on your own terms, offering a playful yet honest soundtrack for life's best moments.
