Herbie Hancock - River: The Joni Letters [CD]

Herbie Hancock reimagines the songs and poetry of Joni Mitchell on this jazz album, featuring guest vocals from Norah Jones, Tina Turner, Corinne Bailey Rae, Luciana Souza, Leonard Cohen and Mitchell herself. It is a one-disc CD for listeners interested in Hancock’s interpretations of Mitchell’s work.

Hancock’s piano-led arrangements bring together songs including “River”, “Court and Spark”, “Amelia” and “The Jungle Line”. The album also features Wayne Shorter, with instrumental versions of Mitchell’s “Sweet Bird” and Duke Ellington’s “Solitude”.

Released on Verve, River was Hancock’s first new studio recording for the label since 1998’s Grammy Award-winning Gershwin’s World.
