Taking the genre that George A Romero invented and turning it on its (severed) head, Alien screenwriter Dan O’Bannon made his directorial debut with one of the most beloved horror-comedies of the 1980s: the instant zombie classic The Return of the Living Dead. The story follows Freddy on his first day at the Uneeda Medical Supply Warehouse, where co-worker Frank reveals airtight canisters of military-lost human remains. When one canister leaks a poison gas, it triggers a full-scale uprising of the undead. Warehouse boss Burt, mortician Ernie, and Freddy’s punker friends must defend themselves against the brain-hungry zombies.

Scored by an immortally cool punk/psychobilly soundtrack featuring The Cramps, The Flesh Eaters, and Tall Boys, this film delivers both rib-tickling gags and gut-churning gore.
