Gigi Masin, the Venetian maestro renowned for his ambient soundscapes, returns with Movement, his first solo full-length since 2020’s Calypso and his debut release on Sacred Bones Records. This album marks a significant moment, reflecting on Masin’s standing among ambient greats while exploring new artistic ambitions. Fuelled by creative reinvention, the music moves seamlessly between melancholy MIDI notes, technoid robotics, groovy liminal cloudscapes, and deep ambient aquatics.

Masin strives to create ambient music designed for movement—dynamic music with a “beating heart full of love”—reconfiguring the genre away from solitary listening toward something somatic that connects with the body. Since his 1986 debut, his work has gained significant recognition, notably when his track “Clouds” was sampled by artists including Björk and Post Malone. Today, he counts Oneohtrix Point Never, Devendra Banhart, and Caroline Polachek among his admirers.

Movement channels literal movement, both in nature and human physical expression to sound. Tracks like “Bed on Mars” offer cosmic atmospherics evoking the sensation of waking unafraid on a new planet. “Lost” features poignant synthesized trumpet and suspended limbo, while the celestial techno funk of “Deception Dance” suggests a collaboration between Sun Electric, Carl Craig, and Kraftwerk. The warmth of “Golden” is likened to the bossa-nova brother of Göttsching’s Balearic classic E2 E4.
