Papillon (1973) - Crime Drama Film [DVD]

Hailed as one of the definitive prison escape dramas, Franklin J. Schaffner's *Papillon* brings to life Henri "Papillon" Charrière's harrowing account of incarceration in the brutal penal colony of French Guiana, including the infamous Devil's Island. Steve McQueen stars as the eponymous hero, a man who refuses to surrender to the inhumane regime, protecting fellow inmate Louis Dega, portrayed by Dustin Hoffman, from abuse and leading multiple daring escape attempts. The film unflinchingly portrays the dehumanizing brutality of the penal system, contrasting it with rare acts of kindness from society's outcasts—lepers and native Indians—highlighting the resilience of the human spirit.
