Bavarian White Beer: A Deep Dive into Weißbier, Weizenbier, and Hefeweizen

Bavarian white beer, known variously as Weißbier, Weizenbier, or Hefeweizen, stands as a remarkable example of a traditional beer style that endured the industrial lager revolution of the nineteenth century. Originating from brewing traditions that crossed the border from Bohemia, this unique top-fermented beer became so popular in Lower Bavaria that Duke Maximilian I made brewing it a strict state monopoly.

This book meticulously details the story of this iconic beer type, exploring its history from its flourishing period under the Bavarian court to its decline in the eighteenth century. Discover how a small, loyal following, including the private brewer Georg Schneider, kept the style alive until a consumer-driven resurgence in the latter half of the twentieth century propelled it back onto the global stage as an internationally recognized classic.
