"Letters from Iwo Jima" (2006), based on the book "Picture Letters from Commander in Chief" by Tadamichi Kuribayashi, presents the battle from the Japanese viewpoint. General Tadamichi Kuribayashi (Ken Watanabe) assumes command of Iwo Jima's defense, determined to protect the island from American forces who seek to use it as a launch point for invasion. Breaking from traditional military tactics, his strategic decisions spark resistance among his own officers, even as soldiers on both sides face the brutal realities of war.

Splendidly politically incorrect by today’s standards but a bit of fun. Set in Nigeria but I suspect filmed in East a Africa - the fever trees in the wildlife scenes give it away
