Buddy Miller presents his first solo album in fifteen years, a twelve-song collection that blends soul, country, early rock 'n' roll, and gospel. Crafted with a community of friends and collaborators spanning five decades of American music, this album is a testament to earned trust and shared artistry.
The album kicks off with 'As Long As I Have You,' a rendition of the early Temptations hit, featuring the soulful backing of the McCrary Sisters. Throughout the record, you'll find compelling co-writes with Julie Miller, including 'You Never Really Get Over It,' 'Losers' Celebration,' and 'Masterpiece in the Sand.' The collection also features a late-period Dan Penn song, 'Not Enough Time To Change,' and Jesse Winchester's poignant 'Lay Down The Burden Of Your Heart.'
A distinguished roster of guest artists adds depth and character to the album. Shawn Colvin and Jim Lauderdale, who were part of Buddy's early '80s New York country band, lend their voices. Dan Penn brings his signature gravitas to the Smokey Robinson-penned 'Don't Look Back,' while The War & Treaty deliver a powerful interpretation of a Winchester track. Lee Ann Womack joins for a duet on 'Stop Me,' and Emmylou Harris, Larry Campbell, and Teresa Williams contribute to the hymn-like 'The Inner Sanctum Of God.' The album concludes with 'Till the Wheels Come Off,' a song about Buddy and Julie's love written by Ashley Monroe, Elizabeth Cook, Angaleena Presley, and Meg McRee, presented as an act of communal devotion.
The core band, comprising Fred Eltringham, Viktor Krauss, Tim Lauer, Steve Fishell, and Fats Kaplin, provides understated nuance, showcasing musicianship honed over years. Five of the twelve tracks are compositions by Julie Miller, and the album's closing words are hers: 'The greatest works of man are just a masterpiece in the sand.'
