Lambchop's seventeenth album, Punching the Clown, sees frontman Kurt Wagner returning to fundamental principles. Inspired by a late-night gospel recording, Wagner delved into the tradition of 'lined out singing,' a Scots-Appalachian call-and-response method where a clerk guides a choir through hymns. This ethos of raw, communal vocalization permeates the album, which features twelve meticulously chosen songs. Recorded over three days, the album includes contributions from guitarist Andrew Broder, Justin Vernon on banjo, and a six-part choir assembled by Blake Morgan. Engineered by Lambchop veteran Mark Nevers, the result is an album described as graceful, wry, and quietly devastating.
