Whistler by Ann Patchett

From the internationally bestselling and prize-winning author of The Dutch House and Tom Lake comes Whistler, a moving and luminous story about family, memory, and enduring love. This novel was selected as a Barack Obama Summer Reading Pick for 2026.

The narrative follows Daphne, who encounters Eddie, her former stepfather, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Their relationship, though brief when Daphne was nine, had a profound and lasting impact on both their lives. As they reconnect, they reflect on their past, the present's joys, and their shared commitment to the future.

Whistler offers an intimate portrait of how the feeling of being truly known by another person can fundamentally change one's life. Praised by The Observer for Patchett's skill in delineating the collisions between present and past, and by The Guardian as 'top-shelf comfort food,' this novel is a testament to the power of familial love to transcend time and blood.
